Lesson Explanation
Colors are adjectives in English — they describe nouns. The color word always comes before the noun it describes: “a red car,” “a blue sky,” “a green bag.”
You can also use colors after the verb “to be”: “The car is red.” / “Her eyes are blue.”
To describe shades, you can use these modifiers:
✦ light + color → light blue, light green
✦ dark + color → dark blue, dark brown
✦ bright + color → bright red, bright yellow
British vs American spelling: In British English it is colour — in American English it is color. Both are correct, just be consistent!
Basic Colors

| Brown | بني | He has brown eyes and dark hair. |
| Black ⚫ | أسود | I always wear black shoes to work. |
| White ⚪ | أبيض | The walls in the classroom are white. |
| Grey / Gray | رمادي | It is a grey and cloudy morning today. |
| Gold | ذهبي | The academy logo uses navy blue and gold. |
Describing Shades of Color

| bright red | أحمر زاهٍ | The car is a bright red colour. |

| pale yellow | أصفر باهت | The walls are painted pale yellow. |
| off-white / cream | أبيض مائل للكريمي | The curtains are a lovely cream colour. |
Useful Expressions with Colors

| Do you have this in blue? | هل هذا متوفر باللون الأزرق؟ | I love this shirt — do you have it in green? |
| It matches / It doesn’t match. | يتناسق / لا يتناسق. | That scarf matches your coat perfectly! |
