Lesson Explanation

Making and responding to invitations is an important social skill in English. Whether you are inviting a friend for coffee, a colleague to a meeting, or a neighbour to a party — knowing the right phrases will help you sound natural and confident.

There are three parts to every invitation exchange: making the invitation, accepting it, or declining it politely. When you decline, it is always polite in English to give a short reason and suggest another time.

💡
Pro Tip: When saying no to an invitation, always soften it with “I’m afraid…” or “Unfortunately…” and suggest an alternative — for example: “I can’t make it on Saturday, but how about Sunday?”
